Newsletter #9
Port Ahuriri School 30 May 2022
Dear Parents & Caregivers
Tēnā koutou te hunga pānui o tō tātou hāpori. Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa
I hope this newsletter finds you all well. We have had a busy couple of weeks with illness, mainly flu and gastro type issues which given the time of the year are to be expected.
There has been a lot happening in the last couple of weeks with school camp, estuary visits as part of our science/technology and Aotearoa New Zealand histories programme.
Coming up are a visit by Rudd Kleinpaste for the Aoraki/Montessori hubs, Coastal Cluster Touch Rugby, gymnastics coaching visits from Omni Gym and our Estuary work display in the hall.
Julia Dallas who is the current teacher for Rata class is leaving us to go on maternity leave at the end of week 8 (23rd of June). Reports and conferences will occur a little earlier than usual for this class. Parent/Teacher conferences will be available on 14th, 15th and 16th of June from 3:30pm onwards. The app (www.schoolinterviews.co.nz) will be available this afternoon, so please book a meeting with Ms Dallas to discuss your child’s learning. The booking reference is: abpcm
Reports and Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up later in the term for the rest of the school. This is the time to make sure that we have your up-to-date details so that the reports can e mailed out to you this year. Please e mail through any change of details to Sonya on admin@portahuriri.school.nz We’ll be in touch closer to the time about booking slots for conferences and how the e mailing of reports will work this year.
Believe it or not, but we are already looking at classes and class numbers for next year. If you have a sibling or know of a child who intends to enrol with us next year, now is the time to be making contact and making sure we have the names and details in the system. The ballot for enrolment in term one and two next year is cut off on 12th August – this is coming up fast, so please, if this affects you, can you make it a priority.
Hope you like the new newsletter format. Have a lovely Queens Birthday holiday weekend.

Looking after the environment by Tova Christensen, Piki Hub
At school and home you can look after the environment. At school you can use both sides of paper and put your rubbish in the bin when you're finished with it. Don't hang on the branches on trees because if the tree dies there will be less oxygen in the air. When you have food scraps left don't put it in the bin instead you can put it in the compost. At home you can have short showers. When you brush your teeth don't leave the tap running or you will waste water. When you leave a room make sure to turn off the lights so you dont waste power. When it is cold, turn the heater off and put a jumper on. Make sure to feed your pets when their bowl is empty. Resume old things and donate them too. Reuse paper and cardboard and make them into something else. Plant a garden and make sure to water it every day.
Poipoi Hub Reading
Mrs Fenn was lucky to have 3 boys from Poipoi Hub read to her about astronauts and the moon. Look at these amazing pictures they have drawn. Well done Albie, Marcus and Corban. Keep up the awesome work.
Looking after our community
Dean, Levi, Tyler and Felix from Piki Hub have been putting rubbish in a pile whilst playing at the trees on Ossian Street after school. Well done boys, what great role models you are.

Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day works to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity in all its forms and supporting schools, workplaces and communities to be safe, supportive, welcoming and inclusive for everyone. To celebrate this important kaupapa we’ll be encouraging our staff and students to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak up,
Stand Together, Stop Bullying!
Thank you to everyone who came dressed in pink. As you can see from the photos the children really got into it and had a great day expressing kindness to others. The school raised $200 which is awesome! Thank you all.
Class Names
If you could also use class names when you email through an absentee that would be great.
They are on the school app if you need to refer to them at any stage.
A reminder that we don't use class numbers any longer. Thank you.
